Vulvas, Erotic Stories, and Activism- Oh My! An Evening with A is For

On Thursday June 13, 2013, Onward and F-Word had the pleasure of attending the A is ForFundraiser for Reproductive Rights hosted by A is For co-founders Lizz Winstead and Martha Plimpton at Babeland in SoHo.

Lizz and Martha have developed an innovative approach to pro-choice advocacy with a scarlet letter “A” as the campaign’s symbol.  A is For encourages men and women to show their support for reproductive rights by wearing the scarlet letter “A,” a symbol that historically represents shame and stigma. By rejecting the symbol’s customary image, A is For is creating a culture of awareness, acceptance and access to information.

Babeland’s sex-positive environment was the perfect location for this benefit as actress Darbi Worley, comedian Emily Epstein White and author Beth Lisick shared their funniest (and real life) erotic stories. The greatest take away of the evening? Sex expert and Babeland co-founder Claire Cavanah’s instructions to never use a butt plug unless it has a flared end- OH, and that women have less access to abortion today than we did in 1973 when the Supreme Court made their landmark decision on Roe v. Wade. As the anti-women sentiments continue to plague Washington and beyond, Lizz emphasized the importance of collective voices and allies in a movement whose importance is as powerful as it is crucial to the future of reproductive rights.
