The human spirit is an incredible thing. When faced with adversity, qualities we never knew existed begin to manifest and allow us persevere. We find ourselves being courageous; brave; funny; strong; selfless and loving. We find ourselves connected to people in ways we never thought possible, our individual realities suddenly intersecting in strange but beautiful ways. We find that we have more in common than previously thought as we fight for a better world.
Three women who may not know each other at all, not even through six degrees of separation, are more similar than they know.
This week, Senator Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) performed an 11-hour filibuster to stall SB-5, an omnibus anti-choice bill that would have imposed severe abortion restrictions in Texas. The bill did not pass. She fought against SB-5 because she dreamed of a better reality for women in Texas and beyond.
In 2010, Edie Windsor filed a lawsuit against the federal government after being forced to pay $363,000 in federal estate taxes on the inheritance of her wife Thea Spyer’s estate due to the restrictions enacted by DOMA in which their marriage, officiated in Toronto, was not recognized. Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled on her case and found DOMA to be unconstitutional. Edie fought against DOMA because she dreamed of equal rights and marriage equality.
On November 23, 2012, Jessica Sultaire was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Epithelial Cancer. She started a blog called The Cancer Chronicles: My Account of the Bold, Bald Battleand inspired friends, family, patients and survivors everywhere with her humor, stoicism and courage. As the song goes, “I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it/There’s something that I’m supposed to be.”
These three women have used their spirit in tremendous ways. They have found a voice, a platform in which to facilitate positive change and impact the lives of others. And what we have found is a rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.
