Anti-Choice Has a New Congressional Voice

On June 12, 2013, H.R.1797 passed the Judiciary Committee on the Constitution and Civil Justice and now moves to the House for a full vote. The bill will ban abortions at 20 weeks with no exceptions for rape, incest or consideration for the patient’s psychological health. The bill’s author, Representative Trent Franks (R-Arizona), peppered the meeting’s discourse with anti-women and anti-choice sentiments that only further exacerbate the current threat to women’s healthcare and reproductive rights. His claim that pregnancies resulting from rape are infrequent is a prime example of the misguided dialogue that guides a portion of the Congressional response to women’s rights and healthcare.
